Okay anyone who even passes by a television or glances at a newspaper has to be aware of what's happening with the stock market in the US and the effects that's having around the world. Now I didn't think I'd turn into one of those grumpy old women (I'm not that old yet any way!) who rave and rant at the television but it happened last night.

The news here in Australia was talking about Lehmman Brothers and AIG and a financial 'expert' came on. He said that because the the fall in the Aussie market people wouldn't be able to retire  and would have to work for more years because so much had been wiped off their pensions. Not once was there any mention of any other options. It was just stay in your job (or get another one) and work harder! I was sooooo annoyed! After so many years and so many books and courses financial 'experts' are still offering the same old advice. The world has changed but their advice hasn't.

When we went to see our financial advisor the other week all he could talk to us about was our pension and unit trusts. There is a need for advisors who can also talk about other options such as property, shares, internet and home based businesses, and other options that even I don't know about. You don't know what you don't know but it's about time that people started finding out. We can't rely on the governments or pensions to fund us - the only people we can rely on is ourselves. If we take responsibility for our own finances then not only will we learn more but we'll be more secure (yes more secure not less secure) when the economy changes.

Sorry I'll get off my soap box now. I've been planning to write a financial course from the basics up and this has given me the push I needed to jump that up to the top of the list.

So when you don't have the money you would like, look around you and see what problems you can solve for someone else, because money lies in solving other people's problems.
