Part 2: What is your definition of success? PDF Print E-mail

I was doing a talk just the other week about mindset and success and someone from the audience asked "How can a book or seminar teach success when you don't know what success is for me?" It was a very valid question. Success is different things to different people and it's important that you know what success is for you.

What does success actually mean to you?

There are many definitions of success and some of these are:

* An event that accomplishes its intended purpose

* The attainment of wealth, position, or honours

* The achievement of something desired, planned, or attempted

* A state of prosperity or fame

It's hard to be successful if you don't know what it means to you.

I've heard quotes from wealthy people saying that money isn't

important to them but it was a good way of keeping score. I've

heard a wealthy friend say that he knew he was successful when he

could be a stay at home Dad and look after his youngest children

since he had missed his older children growing up.

Do you know what success means to you?

Sometimes when thinking about success we think what we want to have

and then we will be successful. An example of that is "When I have

that big beach house then I will be successful". However another

way of looking at this is who do you have to become, what do you

need to do to have that beach house?

What do I mean by who do you have to become?

I mean that you may need to increase your skills to be able to

attain that beach house. For example someone who thinks that owning

a beach house would be great possibly isn't in a financial position

to buy one. So what skills would that person need to master to be

able to afford that house? The last thing you would want is to buy

the house and then find out you couldn't keep it because you

weren't earning enough.

So you may need a higher paid job, or make better investments so

that you can keep the house. What skills to you need to get that

higher paid job or make those investments?

So take some time out to create a definition of success for

yourself. Make sure it's something that can stretch you but

something that you can see yourself achieving. Success breeds

success.
